Andrew Schreiber Selected as
2007 Phil Clancy Memorial Scholarship
Recipient

Again, this year all of the applicants for the scholarship were good, but this year’s winner just simply stood out, showing the passion and drive that were the hallmarks of Phil Clancy.

Andrew Schreiber’s advisor illustrated this with the account that Andrew taught himself 3D animation 3 years ago when he realized there were no returning students or mentors to teach him. He then took this knowledge and had the desire, foresight and determination to teach it to other members of his team.

His advisor summarized his efforts this way: “Andrew has seen what he needed to learn to be successful, and pursued it, regardless of his own personal consequences.”

Andrew has been accepted at both Michigan Technological University and Kettering University and will be pursuing a degree in Computer Science, focusing on Artificial Intelligence.

Andrew summarizes his FIRST experiences by stating “FIRST has taught me how I work, how I think and most importantly who I am.” Congratulations from all your friends at the Phil Clancy Scholarship Committee.

Ian Duggan Selected as
2006 Phil Clancy Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Although it was a difficult decision, the Scholarship committee was pleased to select Ian Duggan as the 2006 recipient of the Phil Clancy Memorial Scholarship. Ian is a graduate of Brandon High School in Ortonville and OSM Tech Academy in Clarkston, and is currently enrolled at Kettering University in Flint, MI.

He was a four year member of FIRST’s Team RUSH. In Ian’s own words, “FIRST© has had a great impact on my life and I feel it has been a priceless experience. As a student, I have been able to apply what I’ve learned in a realistic and competitive environment similar to what one would experience in an actual job. Everything I learn in school has a purpose and that purpose is clarified through FIRST©. It is clear to me and my teammates that the robot is a great example of the concepts we’re learning in action. FIRST© has also impacted me as a person. Team RUSH requires at least fifteen hours of community service each year. This was a lot of fun to partake in, and it was clear that I could really make a difference in my community… Regardless of where I spent my time it was worth it just to see how much it was appreciated. I feel that that alone is worth making community service an aspect of my life in the future.”

We couldn’t have said it better, Ian. (Sounds like a future member of the Clancy Memorial Open committee.) Congratulations, Ian. Now go make us proud.

4th Annual Phil Clancy Memorial Open 2006 Results

Rick Knoechel, Event Chairman, and Laura Clancy, Scholarship Chairperson, ready for a
day of golf.

What do you get when you combine 44 golfers, 80° weather and a robot? You get the very successful, 4th Annual Phil Clancy Memorial Open. Sunny skies greeted the golfers as they arrived for registration, and the sunny skies remained with us the entire day. (Anyone remember the first Clancy Open – overcast, 40° and strong winds?) Mulligans were the order of the day as the team scores plummeted.

Of course the Clancy Open is similar to “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” A group of four people have a good time spending the afternoon improvising, the cores really don’t matter and everyone takes turns making fun of the host (Rick Knoechel) What really matters is the fact that this year’s event raised roughly $5,000 for the Clancy Scholarship fund. And that is the only score that really matters.

2006’s Clancy Open raised roughly $5,000 for the Clancy Scholarship Fund.

The 2006 winning foursome came to us courtesy of MTS Systems Corporation. MTS has been a longtime supporter of the Phil Clancy Memorial Golf Outing, so it is fitting that they were able to capture some of the glory. The winning group included:

John Calverly
- Sales Engineer - MTS Systems
Dr. Paul Schafnitz DDS
Ray Schroer
- Sales Engineer - EQS
Randy Norman
- Owner, Ely Menswear - Troy, MI

Congratulations for a job well done. As for the rest of you, consider seeing Laura for some more Mulligans!

From the Heart

On behalf of the Phil Clancy  Memorial Scholarship committee and the Clancy family, I would like to express my sincere thank you for your participation in our recent golf outing. Your support is so greatly appreciated. In addition to giving a $2,000 scholarship this spring, your support has allowed us to reach our goal of a $10,000 fund balance necessary to achieve endowment status. To accomplish this in only four years truly amazes me and shows how blessed we are to have supporters such as you.

Sincerely,
Laura Clancy
